60 MINUTES SAYS SORRY, WE WERE WRONG

August 1, 2011 by Baz Jarockyj

ПОДЯКA

Ukraine .

Last Sunday, 24th July 2011, Channel 9’s “60 Minutes” program featured a segment called Ukrainian Brides.  In the opinion of the Ukrainian community in Australia this segment debased Ukrainian women.  In addition the program reporters repeatedly used the incorrect term “The Ukraine” (the correct designation is simply “Ukraine”).  Many protests were lodged.

In the following program broadcast on 31st July 2011, “60 Minutes” issued an apology and an admission of use of incorrect terminology.

The Executive of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) issued the following statement:

31st July 2011

THANK YOU

The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations extends its gratitude to all who responded to our call last week to protest to the “60 Minutes” Program about Ukrainian Brides.

The protest issues were:

  • Ukrainian women were depicted badly – as being no more than sex objects
  • The term THE Ukraine was constantly used instead of Ukraine.

We are aware that many protests were lodged and on this evening’s 60 Minutes program there was a –‘We were wrong’ statement and an apology.

In the 60 Minutes mail section, extracts from 2 letters were presented – one of these from Chrystyna Wowk from Sydney.

Through the process it was pleasing to receive copies of letters written by some younger members of the community – Articulate and succinct – These young people should be used more in often in putting across the Ukrainian message.

Well done to all who contributed.
