For service to sport, particularly as the national head coach of the Australian Olympic Sailing team.
Victor KOVALENKO OAM
- Born in Dnipropetrovsk in Ukraine on 5th August, 1950.
- 32 medals including 6 Olympic medals among them 3 gold, 6 world championships and 6 European championships.
- Fulltime student on the Ukraine’s athletic team, becoming an Honorary Master of Sports after 10 years and then President.
- Awarded a Special diploma with a gold medal from the faculty of Physical Culture of the Nikolaev State Pedagogical Institute in the Ukraine
- National champion in the 470 and Flying Dutchman classes in the former Soviet Union
- Coached the 1996 470 Men’s and Women’s Ukraine crews to Olympic gold and bronze respectively
- In October 1997, accepted the Australian Yachting Federation’s offer to coach the Australian 470 crews.
- Named National Head Coach and AIS Sailing Program Head Coach following the 2000 Olympic Games.
- Granted Australian citizenship in 2003
- In November 2004, inducted into the 470 Hall of Fame
