Yaroslava Mahuchikh has done it again, rising to the occasion in the women’s high jump – securing Ukraine’s second gold in the Olympics. Ukrainian hopes were flying high, since less than a month ago at a Diamond League meet in Paris our golden girl had captured a new women’s high jump world record that stood for 37 years!
And to give the Ukrainian-Australian community extra reason to rejoice, Australia’s Nicola Olyslagers won silver, while Australia’s Eleanor Patterson and Ukraine’s Iryna Gerashchenko tied for bronze!
Yaroslava Mahuchikh said after her win the medal was “for our country, Ukraine, for our defenders. It’s only thank(s) (to) them that we have the opportunity to be here.”
It is inspiring to watch our athletes represent our nations with such tenacity and resilience, and stand together on the winners podium.
Way to go Team Australia & Team Ukraine!
