On August 24, 1991, the state independence of Ukraine was restored, crowning the thousand-year history of our people. From the eras of Kyivan Rus’, the Principality of Galicia-Volyn, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Ukrainian Cossack State and Ukrainian state formations of the early 20th century, modern Ukraine inherited the traditions of statehood and independence.
Ukrainians continue to pay a very high price for their independence and freedom: today, they are giving their lives to defend their country and people against Russia’s illegal and genocidal invasion. Despite this, the Ukrainian people will celebrate Ukraine’s 33rd anniversary of restored independence, proving their strength, indomitability, fortitude and readiness to fight for victory and freedom.
This year, there will be over 200 events in over 160 cities in 28 countries honouring Ukraine’s independence and the daily sacrifices made by Ukrainians.
In Australia, our community will be holding concerts, rallies, festivals, cultural performances, markets, flag raisings, and lighting buildings in blue and yellow. The AFUO thanks its hromada and member organisations for their huge role in organising these events.
We urge all our community members and friends of Ukraine to attend an event, post messages with the hashtag #StandWithUkraine and show the world we are a united and peace-loving people!
