Last weekend across Australia, the Australian-Ukrainian community stood united in rallies to demand action from the Australian Government and the international community to respond to the 2nd deadliest month of russian attacks Ukrainians since the start of the full-scale invasion.
The #LetUkraineStrikeBack rallies urged the Australian Government to advocate for Ukraine’s allies to lift restrictions on Ukraine using long range weapons against russian military targets in the name of self-defence and deterrence. From Sydney to Canberra to Hobart, voices were raised in solidarity with Ukraine, urging greater support in the face of relentless russian missile strikes on civilians. The ABC attended the rallies in Sydney and Canberra.
“We call on the Australian Government to help Ukraine close its skies, resist terror and protect its people. Let Ukraine properly defend itself. We should not allow Russian missile launch sites to have greater protection than Ukrainian civilians,” said Co Chair of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations, Ms Kateryna Argyrou.
“Australia can play an important role in helping Ukraine to bring these horrific, unspeakably cruel missile attacks to an end. Otherwise, we continue to expose Ukraine’s children to daily Russian rocket and missile attacks.
“We also continue our call, alongside many others, for the Australian Government to reopen its embassy in Kyiv and provide ongoing military support to Ukraine. This support is critical to help Ukraine in its defence of democratic values and the rules-based order, which has been threatened by Russia’s illegal and unprovoked invasion,” she concluded.
