Leading up to Saturday 25 November, Holodomor Awareness Day, the AFUO and Australian-Ukrainian community will join worldwide campaigns and commemorative events marking 90 years since the 1932-33 Holodomor genocide in Ukraine.
As in other countries, the AFUO has written to every Member of Parliament urging them to support Australia declaring the Holodomor – an artificial famine carried out by the Soviet dictator Stalin against the Ukrainian people – a genocidal act.
Around Australia, there are many events you can attend – church services, solemn rallies, movie screenings and exhibitions. See our nation-wide listing here.
On 25 November 25, you can also join the Ukrainian World Congress #ShineALight campaign. Light a candle of remembrance. Take a photo and share on social media with the hashtags #ShineALight, #Holodomor90, and #IBelieveInUkrainesFuture.
We cannot forget that today, just as in 1932-33, Russia continues to try to destroy the national aspirations of the Ukrainian people and continues to use food as a weapon of war.
Let us pay tribute to the victims of the Holodomor.
Let us continue to fight to prevent another genocide.
