The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) has strongly supported the Australian Parliament’s decision to pass government legislation to cancel the lease held by Russia on a site near Parliament House due to national security concerns.
“As a terrorist state, Russia’s presence right next to Parliament House is untenable,” said the AFUO Co-Chairs Stefan Romaniw OAM and Kateryna Argyrou.
A year ago, the AFUO welcomed the National Capital Authority’s (NCA) decision to cancel the Russian Federation’s lease on the land because it had sat on it for too long. The Russian Embassy disputed the decision and went to the Federal Court seeking to overturn the eviction notice.
“It is contemptible that the Russian Embassy sought legal recourse against the NCA, as an ‘aggrieved party’. Russia has shown wilful, blatant and criminal disregard for legal agreements and international law in its brutal and immoral invasion of Ukraine. It almost beggars belief they would take advantage of Australian democratic and legal processes to achieve their aims,” they added.
The AFUO urges the Australian Government to continue providing military and humanitarian support to Ukraine.
“Russia is the number one national threat to all democratic countries,” they said.
