The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) was delighted to make a submission to the Federal Treasury’s consultation on the expansion of Australia’s tax treaty network. Our submission was wholly focused on establishing a tax treaty between Australia and Ukraine as a priority.
Agreeing a bilateral tax treaty would:
- Strengthen economic and people‑to‑people links between Australia and Ukraine
- Be a productivity enabler by ensuring earnings were taxed once, rather than in both Ukraine and Australia
- Encourage Australian businesses to establish operations or pursue commercial opportunities in Ukraine
- Provide certainty to Australian businesses, allowing them to scope the role they can play in Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction effort
- Support the enforcement of Ukrainian and Australian taxation laws
- Be a strong sign of Australia’s support for Ukraine, which brings both substantive and symbolic value
We are grateful for the opportunity to advocate on the community’s behalf on this issue. We encourage the Treasury to accelerate progress and deliver a bilateral tax treaty as a priority.
