While Australia’s current sanctions regime has been deployed to some useful effect to hold russia (and its supporters) to account for the brutal, illegal, and ongoing invasion of Ukraine, there remain many opportunities to tighten the sanctions regime.
The AFUO’s submission to the Senate inquiry into Australia’s sanctions regime is focused on four recommendations:
1️⃣ Ensuring Australia is fully aligned with the sanctions declarations made by Ukraine and Ukraine’s partners, with no ‘gaps’ in designated persons or entities
2️⃣ Closing sanctions loopholes which continue to enable trade with russia, including importing products made from russian crude oil
3️⃣ Freezing, seizing and repurposing russian-controlled assets in Australia to help rebuild Ukraine
4️⃣ Expanding sanctions against direct (Iran, North Korea) and indirect (China) supporters of russia’s invasion of Ukraine
The AFUO also congratulates the Ukrainian Council of NSW – ОУГ НПВ (UCNSW) for their submission to the inquiry.
