Russian aggression in Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula and eastern Ukraine has inflicted an immeasurable cost on the civilian population in Ukraine. The London-based Ukrainian Information Service has compiled the following statistics based on official sources (such as the UNHCR, OCHA and UNICEF). It is worth remembering:
- 14,000 thousand death toll
- 1.5 million people internally displaced
- 3.4 million people in need of humanitarian assistance
- 1.5 million elderly in need
- 510,00 children growing up surrounded by violence
- Over 750 education facilities damaged by shelling
- 50,000 homes damaged or destroyed
- 530,000 people are food insecure
- One in four persons in eastern Ukraine suffer water shortages
- Over 100 Ukrainian political prisoners held hostage by Russia
- 5th globally for causalities caused by landmines
- 420 kilometre ‘contact line’ leaving millions facing severe restrictions
