This afternoon, in a telephone conversation with the Co-chair Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) and Vice President of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) Stefan Romaniw, Australia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne reiterated the Australian Government’s strong support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Minister, who is travelling overseas tomorrow, committed to standing with Australia’s international partners in condemning Russian aggression.
The Minister also indicated she had spoken to Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba to relay the support of the Australian people at this challenging time.
‘The AFUO, the UWC and the Australian-Ukrainian community thank the Minister for her and the Australian Government’s support. It is part of our ongoing commitment to expose Putin’s motives and total disrespect for international values,’ said Mr Romaniw.
Mr Romaniw also informed the Minister that the AFUO will continue with its major humanitarian aid program, the Ukraine Crisis Appeal, and is ready to lock into the internationally coordinated support program for Ukraine.
He also raised the issue of increased support for Ukraine – no lethal military aid, humanitarian, cyber security assistance and more substantial, hard-hitting sanctions.
“Australia has shown international leadership in showing bipartisan support to Ukraine. That is also critical,” said Mr Romaniw.
“The AFUO acknowledges the support of the everyday Australians who are contacting their friends and neighbours of Ukrainian background and saying, ‘We are with you, ‘We support you’ and ‘Putin needs to stop this bullying and aggression. These sentiments have been relayed to, and greatly received by, civil society and the Government in Ukraine,” Mr Romaniw said.
Mr Romaniw also informed the Minister that the AFUO and its state affiliates would be holding rallies in all capital cities this coming Sunday, February 20, 2022, on the 8th anniversary of the killing of the Heavenly Hundred during the Revolution of Dignity. The rally themes are #StandWithUkraine and #StopPutinNow
