The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) has echoed calls by the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) calling upon NATO to give Ukraine more defensive weapons to assist it to ‘close the skies’ and stop the brutal bombing and shelling of Ukrainian cities and people.
In advance of the Extraordinary NATO Summit on March 24 in Brussels, the AFUO urges the Australian Government to encourage NATO leaders to support the courage and bravery of the Ukrainian people and act with resolve in immediately stepping up and meeting public commitments to properly arm Ukraine with defensive weapons.
Specifically, the AFUO supports calls for NATO member states to deliver to Ukraine:
- fighter jets and tank busting bombers
- anti-tank and air-defence systems
- military drones
‘Russian Armed Forces are committing terrible war crimes and genocide in Ukraine. The Ukrainian people will not give up. We call on Ukraine’s allies to immediately deliver the requested weapons Ukrainians need to defend themselves,’ said Mr Stefan Romaniw OAM, Co-Chair AFUO.
“Here in Australia, donations can also be made to the AFUO U-HELP fund, which is providing help to Ukraine’s defenders. Donations will be used to assist in the procurement and delivery of a range of evolving needs, including medical supplies, fuel, night-vision goggles and protective equipment,’ said Mr Romaniw.
‘We call upon Australia and the international community to immediately arm Ukraine with the tools it needs to defend itself from Russian genocide. It is not just the future of Ukraine which is at stake here – it is the future of European security,’ said Mr Romaniw.
