Honouring Strength, Resilience, and New Beginnings!
Today 20 June, on World Refugee Day, we reflect on the journeys of the more than 5,000 displaced Ukrainians who have found safety in Australia since the beginning of russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Over the past almost 3.5 years, our Ukrainian-Australian community has grown, transformed, and shown the world the true meaning of courage, solidarity, and compassion.
From young children enrolling in schools across the country, to mothers rebuilding their careers, grandparents learning a new language, and entire families adapting to life far from home — every story is one of perseverance.
Many arrived with only a suitcase and a heavy heart. And yet through community, culture, and kindness, they are rebuilding lives and contributing meaningfully to our diaspora community and Australian society.
Today we honour their strength. We express our deep gratitude to the schools, volunteers, local councils, host families, and every person who has welcomed displaced Ukrainians with open arms.
To all those forced to flee their homes from russia’s illegal war and persecution: your courage inspires us. You are not just displaced persons — you are our neighbours, classmates, colleagues, and friends. You are home here.
