Dr Olga Boichak reviews on ‘The Conversation’
Sydney-based scholar and community member Dr Olga Boichak co-authors a sharp analysis of the recent US-Ukraine minerals deal. While some headlines claim Ukraine “caved” to Trump’s demands, Boichak argues Zelenskyy achieved a strategic win. The revised agreement secures US investment without sacrificing Ukraine’s sovereignty or legal control over its resources — a sharp contrast to earlier, exploitative terms.

Ukraine’s critical minerals are vital to global supply chains, especially as the West aims to reduce reliance on China. While financial returns may be years away, the geopolitical implications are immediate: the deal strengthens US ties to Ukraine, sends a signal to russia and China, and gives Trump a foreign policy “win.”
